Interview with Jamie Arnold, Haul Truck Driver at Texas Materials

How did you get started in this career?

I got started because I really like driving, and it was an opportunity for me to have a job and pursue my hobby as well. I studied and prepared for my CDL, and I’ve been driving ever since. Over the years in my career, I’ve operated water trucks, front end loaders, skid steers and haul trucks. I’ve been driving for 12 years here at Texas Materials.

What do you enjoy about your job?

I enjoy the people I work with. It’s a very people-friendly environment. First of all, my manager, Brent, is awesome. He’s someone you can talk with about anything and he is very understanding. And we have a great crew – everybody has each other’s back and we get along well. It makes the job a lot easier.

Any advice for new drivers?

If you want to drive, all I can say is, pursue it. Because if it’s a dream, it can come to reality. That’s what I did; I’ve been driving since I was 15 years old. I really love driving, and I believe that if you love what you do, it doesn’t feel like you’re working.

Anything you’d like to share about yourself?

I love motorcycles. I’ve been riding since I was five years old. I also enjoy restoring old cars; I have a ‘65 Impala and a ’55 Chevrolet. I also love playing basketball with my son.
