How Tough Does Your Asphalt Need To Be?

As you likely know, different traffic conditions and weather types call for different asphalt mixes. What’s the right mix for your job? Experienced paving contractors like Gulf Coast know how to best optimize mix designs to get the best possible surface for your project.

Gulf Coast is well known around Beaumont, Jasper, and Houston for Hot Mix Asphalt, Cold Mix Asphalt, Aggregates, Recycled Asphalt Products and all types of Construction Services.

Cold Mix Asphalt is the right mix for lower-traffic roads, utility cuts and our preferred patching material.

Our cold mix emulsifies top-quality asphalt binding adhesives and anti-stripping agents in water prior to mixing it with our aggregate. In its emulsified state, experience tells us that asphalt is less viscous and the mixture is both easier to shape and make compact. The emulsion will break when enough water evaporates. At this point the cold mix takes on the properties of hot-mix asphalt.

More common, our Hot Mix Asphalt (HMA) is made by heating the asphalt binder to decrease its viscosity, and dry the aggregate. This process removes moisture from the material prior to mixing. Hot Mix Asphalt is commonly known for its bituminous effect.

In the hot-mixing process, our aggregate is heated to high temperatures: approximately 300°F for virgin asphalt, and slightly higher for polymer modified asphalt. Like the name sounds, both our paving and compaction is performed while the asphalt is still very hot. Hot mix paving is done during the Gulf Coast’s warmer weather periods because the underlying base and ambient temperatures may cool the asphalt too much before it is able to be compacted to the required density during colder weather.

You’ll see our HMA on the area’s high-traffic pavements, including major highways, airfields and even racetracks. HMA is the environmental liner for reservoirs, fish hatchery ponds, and our area’s landfills.
