Note: since the publication of this article, Wheeler has changed its name to Texas Materials.

Wheeler is a leading asphalt contractor and supplier with an unparalleled track record. If you’ve driven in Central Texas, from San Antonio to Austin or Waco, you’ve been on our roads. We’re based in lovely Cedar Park, TX, just north of Austin and are a part of Oldcastle Materials (now Texas Materials), the top vertically integrated supplier of aggregates, asphalt, ready-mix concrete, and construction and paving services in the United States.

In everything we do, Oldcastle Materials operates on a foundation of three guiding values:

1. Safety: There is no acceptable goal for safety other than zero — zero fatalities and zero incidents. Safety is our No. 1 value, and it’s taken seriously by every employee, from the CEO to the front line. In the last 10 years, even as our company was experiencing triple-digit growth, we cut our accident frequency rate in half. We’re proud to have one of the best safety records in the industry. We also are committed to the safety of the public, surrounding communities, and visitors to our sites.

2. Quality: All facets of our business — products, services, employees and companies — are held to the highest standards of quality. Nothing less is acceptable to our customers or to us, and our long-standing commitment to quality is evident in our leadership position in the industry. Customers recognize quality and return time and again to the companies — like Oldcastle Materials — that provide it.

3. Integrity: Oldcastle Materials takes pride in an unflagging dedication to fair, honest dealings with our customers, suppliers, employees, and communities. Ethics are not a luxury; trust is earned, and at Oldcastle Materials ethical behavior is a non-negotiable expectation for all of our companies and employees.

As a leading producer of asphalt paving mixtures for the Central Texas Region, Wheeler specializes in all types of asphalt paving and repair, bringing decades of experience to your project. We know the local weather patterns and traffic conditions and can optimize mix designs when needed to get the right surface for your project.

Wheeler’s many services include: Asphalt Repair, Striping, Handicap Signs, Traffic Signs, Crack Fill, Street Sweeping, Concrete Wheel Stops, Sealcoating, Speed Bumps, Concrete, Dumpster Pads. Bicycle Racks, Handicap Ramps and ADA Modifications.

We pave with construction aggregates, asphalt binder, additives and modifiers and create the perfect mix of ingredients customized for each project.

Our products include:

Cold mix asphalt concrete, which is commonly used as a patching material and on lesser trafficked service roads.

Hot mix asphalt concrete, also known as HMAC or HMA by heating the asphalt binder to decrease its viscosity, and drying the aggregate to remove moisture prior to mixing.

Warm mix asphalt concrete or WMA can be produced by adding either zeolites, waxes, asphalt emulsions, or sometimes even water to the asphalt binder prior to mixing. We use these additives in hot mixed asphalt for easier compaction and also to allow cold weather paving or longer hauls. This method allows for significantly lower mixing and laying temperatures and results in lower consumption of fossil fuels, thus releasing less carbon dioxide, aerosols and vapors. With critical time schedules for construction, not only are working conditions improved, but the lower lying-temperature also leads to more rapid availability of the surface for use.

Wheeler’s asphalt concrete is 100% recyclable and is the most widely reused construction material in the world. Less than one percent is actually disposed of in landfills.

Our paving products will consistently exceed your specifications and since many of the specifications vary by state or locality, Wheeler employs a staff of quality control managers, highly trained engineers, and materials technicians, providing outstanding support and service to our customers to meet your specific needs.

The lifespan of a road is easily prolonged through good design, sound construction and maintenance. During our design phase, Wheeler engineers measure the traffic on a road (or estimate the potential use), paying special attention to the number and types of trucks and other vehicles that pass through. Part of the evaluation includes inspecting the subsoil to see how much load it can withstand. Drainage, including storm drains, ditches and underdrains are built into the road to remove water from the roadbed, preventing it from weakening the subbase and subsoil.

Experience tells us that it is far less expensive to keep a road in good condition than it is to repair it once it has deteriorated. Count on Wheeler for any needed repairs and paving system maintenance. We do sealcoating for small cracks with bituminous crack sealer to prevent water from enlarging cracks through weathering or percolating down to the subbase, which softens it.

Next time you need asphalt repair, and you need it done quick, look no further than Wheeler. We are one of the fastest asphalt pavers in Central Texas, but not only do we get the job done quick, we get it done the right way to ensure your project will last long and hold strong.
