Award Winning Asphalt Is Actually A Thing, And Gulf Coast Has It

Gulf Coast, a CRH Americas company, won big at the recent TxDOT/TXAPA quality pavement awards luncheon, held in Montgomery, Texas on September 22, 2017. In the Special Awards Category, Gulf Coast won for its involvement in the Watco Companies’ Greens Port Industrial Park dock expansion project in Harris County.

Watco Companies has been expanding their Greens Port Industrial Park dock capacity to service the increasing container ship delivery demand on the Houston Ship Channel. Watco Companies’ Construction Division was the general contractor on the project and Chance Contracting was the asphalt laydown contractor. Watco placed the aggregate base material in preparation for Chance Contracting’s paving crew and Gulf Coast’s hot mix asphalt materials. Chance paved a combined 32,000 tons of black base and surface mix with daily production averaging approximately 2,000 tons per day. Chance Contracting and Oldcastle Materials Gulf Coast met all mix and road specifications and had zero safety incidents over the course of the nearly one year project.

In the end, Gulf Coast’s award winning participation in the project left Chance Contracting and the owner, Watco Companies, pleased and excited for the dock expansion opening.

In The Dispatch, Watco’s internal newsletter, the Senior VP of Operations for the Houston Division stated, “No other docks in Houston are like it and can do what we do.”
